On Saturday 12 March, Samaritans is running a roadshow event to raise awareness of local mental health support services available to the community and to remind the public that whatever they’re facing, Samaritans volunteers are there to listen 24/7.

The challenges that people face up and down the country have been felt even more deeply over the last two years, as the pandemic has had a profound impact on the nation’s mental health. Samaritans 20,000 volunteers across the UK have continued to provide emotional support throughout the pandemic, responding to 10,000 calls for help every day. With easing restrictions and continued change, the charity’s services are needed now more than ever.

To help, volunteers from Leeds Samaritans will be at Briggate, Leeds between 10am and 4pm to talk to locals about their services and provide emotional support to anyone who may need it.

Visitors will find the volunteers at the charity’s Real People, Real Stories campaign roadshow trailer which displays inspirational quotes from men who have successfully overcome tough times of their own. As this group is most at risk of suicide, the campaign aims to encourage others to seek help by calling Samaritans on 116 123.

Frank Jones, Director of Leeds Samaritans branch said: The pandemic’s challenges are continuing and won’t immediately ease off with restrictions lifting. Therefore, it’s vitally important we do everything we can to help anyone who needs support.

“The volunteers at Leeds Samaritans are really looking forward to being out within the community and talking to people at the roadshow. We’re here for anyone and we know how powerful human connection can be - both for the other person’s mental health and your own too. It’s important to reach out for a chat with someone you care about - whether that’s in person or over the phone, it’s about taking the time to be there for each other, which could potentially save a life.”
