A toolkit has been published to help NHS organisations in the aftermath of the death of an employee by suicide. NHS Confederation

The Samaritans, in partnership with the NHS Confederation, have published ‘NHS Employee Suicide’ – a postvention toolkit to help manage impact and provide support to colleagues in the event of an employee suicide.

A foreword by Dr Navina Evans and Dame Ruth May, chief workforce officer and chief nursing officer, respectively, at NHS England, said when a staff Samaritans member dies by suicide, “the impact on colleagues is devastating and far reaching”.

They said: “This toolkit has been designed to help NHS trusts support their workforce after the death of a colleague by suicide.

“It is just one part of the resources available to the NHS to support their staff, including on how to reduce the risk of suicide.

“There is always more to learn, and this toolkit will also compliment a piece of long-term research that is looking in depth at this issue of postvention response in the NHS.”

They added: “We hope this will help support people going through one of the most difficult and traumatic times of their lives and we thank all individuals and organisations involved in the development of this resource.”
