Leeds Mind has launched a project to improve suicide bereavement support for South Asian communities.
The charity’s Suicide Bereavement Service offers vital support to hundreds of people who have lost someone to suicide every year – but it is known that getting this support can sometimes be much harder for people from culturally diverse communities.
Charity bosses say the reasons for this are complex but from previous work on attitudes to mental health, they know it tends to focus on stigma, shame, guilt and embarrassment as well as pressure from families or community groups.
The service is now inviting people from South Asian backgrounds to share their experiences and opinions on accessing suicide bereavement support to help better understand the barriers they face – so as to help more people with similar experiences.
A tea and chat event will be held online, using Zoom, on December 15th from 12-1.30pm, for people to share their experiences and thoughts in a safe space.
